Sigma Phi Epsilon is named Caldwell Cup Champs and Fraternity of the Year
At the November 13, 2010 homecoming football game, the top five fraternities were led out
onto the football field at halftime and recognized for their success in the past year. Sigma Phi Epsilon
(“SigEp”) was awarded the Caldwell Cup for the second year in a row for their ability to succeed in all
three of the measured categories. Placing third in academics, first in standards, and third in intramurals,
SigEp was able to attain the coveted award again despite placing lower in two of the categories than
the 2008-2009 year. “We had an off year for sure but were still able to pull off a convincing win for the
chapter and our alumni. Last year we won by the biggest margin ever, this year it was a little bit less”
said former Chapter President Jeff Horan, who presided over the second half of this latest Caldwell win.
“What sets us apart from other chapters and allows us to succeed consistently is our commitment to
our ideals, along with some amazing help from our volunteers and alumni. We really would be lost
without their help.”
SigEp was also recognized at halftime for being awarded the Fraternity of the Year Award, which
is given out by the Greek Life office annually to the Fraternity who best exemplifies the ideals of the
Greek Community as determined by the staff. SigEp was also close in the running for the award last year
but did not receive it.
This year’s Caldwell Cup scoring saw the introduction of additional categories of measurement,
including Greek Week, Homecoming, and IFC participation points. However, the vast majority of the
award still stems from the fraternities’ competency in academics, standards, and athletics. The program
is designed to help drive chapters to excel in all categories of fraternal life rather than just focus on one
or two specific talents.
On top of the two awards, SigEp found out shortly before homecoming from its Headquarters
that it had been accepted as a full-fledged chapter, and starting in the spring would be officially be
named the NC Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, returning the NC Beta name to a campus that had
borne it for over 100 years.

To begin with, Sigma Nu and sorority Delta Gamma WON FIRST PLACE OVERALL in NCSU’s Homecoming 2010: No Wake Zone! In only their second year together, the pair came out in force and participated all week in numerous attendance-based campus events. The duo improved on their third place finish from last year, trumping the incumbent Student Wolfpack Club by a small margin. This victory will not only add another accomplishment to the chapter’s already long list, but it will also put the chapter into contention for NCSU’s Fraternity of the Year Award in 2011. Beta Tau would like to thank the ladies of Delta Gamma and Homecoming Chairman Taylor Moseley for their hard work and dedication throughout this huge undertaking.

In other news, Beta Tau would like to congratulate all of the newly-elected executive officers including: Taylor Moseley (Eminent Commander), Philip Misklow (Lieutenant Commander), Luke Pyle (Treasurer), Chris Allen (Recorder), Christopher Brenton (Recruitment Chairman), and Elias Ballew (Candidate Marshal). The newly-elected and re-elected brothers will lead Beta Tau into what hopefully will be the most successful and productive year in chapter history.
In addition to the new officers, Beta Tau will also be congratulating and welcoming eleven new brothers into the chapter this Sunday, November 14th. The men will complete their candidacy and become full-fledged Knights. A majority of the chapter and several alumni are planning to attend a day that marks the beginning of a new chapter in Beta Tau history. After the ceremony, everybody is welcome to come celebrate at the Carolina Ale House in Cary.
Lastly, the brothers of Sigma Nu held a semi-formal last Thursday, November 4th at Rum Runners in downtown Raleigh. Everyone stayed safe and had a great time. Beta Tau would like to thank Social Chairman Brian Cerrito for orchestrating such a fun and successful event.
